Hollow Chair

Æ//

Born from an in-depth exploration of traditional upholstering techniques, this chair represents the distilled result of that inquiry. By meticulously examining and deconstructing these methods, only the fundamental elements reminiscent of an upholstered chair remain: the wooden frame and its voluminous, soft silhouette.

Stripping away all layers of fabric and padding unveils the concealed webbing beneath. Through a nuanced shaping of the wood frame, a voluminous structure takes form, relying solely on the webbing. Transforming the chair from a solid entity into an almost transparent form, it bares its innermost self. Applying tension to the webbing recreates a soft, cushion-like shape, eliminating the need for foam or fabric.

For ÆTHER/MASS, collaboration multiplies what is possible by getting access to the skills that have been mastered by others. For the making of this object, we worked closely together with CasimirAteliers, master woodworkers specialised in high-end solid wooden furniture. For the webbing, we collaborated with the Atelier of Sophie Doore.
