Cubist Chair
Æ//
The Cubist Chair draws inspiration from Cubism, an early 20th-century avant-garde art movement that revolutionized visual arts by deconstructing subjects into abstract, geometric forms. In Cubism, subjects are analyzed, fragmented, and reassembled to depict multiple perspectives simultaneously, offering a more comprehensive representation of reality.
The chair’s design begins with the most basic universal shape—the square. This fundamental form is reimagined in a three-dimensional context by extruding it into a cube. By multiplying this cube, four identical shapes are combined into a collage that shifts in perspective when viewed from different angles. This dynamic interplay of shapes invites viewers to explore the chair from multiple vantage points, each revealing a different aspect of its structure.
The chair's design is a deliberate abstraction of traditional furniture elements such as legs, seat, and backrest, which are transformed into sculptural forms that are less immediately recognizable. This deconstruction and reassembly of familiar shapes challenge traditional notions of what a chair should look like, offering a new perspective on form and function.
For the making of this object, we worked closely together with the skilled artisans of Studio Stelt, master upholsterers.
